In February 2023 I flushed a single female and two juvenile Scarlet-chested Parrots from a track in Gluepot Reserve near Waikerie in South Australia. Come early May 2023, between 70 and 100 Scarlet-chested Parrots in numerous flocks were observed feeding on new growth in a small area of mallee in the same area. Numbers like this haven’t been recorded in South Australia, or anywhere in Australia for decades. This image depicting a male bird feeding on a mallee eucalypt was captured soon after the flocks were located together and birders began descending on the area from all over Australia, and as far away as New Zealand.
